As an avid nature lover, I was finally able to experience a boyhood wish of mine to go underground on a caving trip. After discovering the beauty of the underground world, I began the daunting challenge of cave photography using a digital camera. The nature of the cave environment presents its own complications. First there is the task of keeping your equipment whole, clean and dry throughout the trip. Carrying your equipment in the packaging required ,slows your progress and can be cumbersome at times. Lighting is a key issue in this dark and damp environment. After getting very nice results using a digital camera, I decided to try a hand at 35mm photography underground. I was unable to get underground for some time after purchasing my 35mm camera. While waiting to take my camera into a cave I began working on ways improve my lighting system. Then I began to take my camera along with me whenever I was hiking. During this time I became more familiar with 35mm photography and the kind of photography I could take using a macro lens. When I was finally was able to go underground, I used the improved lighting system and experience to produce photographs that reflect the adventure of caving along with examples of formations and the unique environment found in caves.

Scott Hollow Cave, WV - Patty Lane : This is the third largest cave in West Virginia. It is privately owned and access is by permission ONLY. All photography was done by permission of the owner. I asked the owner of the cave for his suggestions to where would be a good section to photograph. He suggested Patty Lane. This nicely decorated section was recently made much more easily accessable due to a small choked area having been recently removed.

Surprise Cave, NY : My most local cave,Access is by permit only...............................I have held the key to this cave for many years. I have used a point and shoot digital camera a lot in this cave and in the best area (The heaven room). One day my hard drive died and all was lost but for a few.. I do plan on going back..keep checking back.
